HOW TO PROPERLY TRANSITION YOUR DOG OR CAT TO A NEW FOOD
Did you know that you shouldn’t switch your pets food cold turkey? As much as we wish we could just swap foods cold turkey, it’s actually not good for their guts and potentially our wallets.
There is a safe, slow way to do it and I wanted to take moment to share the proper way to transition your pups or cats from one food to another. If you start your fur babies off with a food rotation at a young age, it makes it much easier to give a variety of foods daily. That is one of the many reasons that I feed my cats and dogs numerous food options, rather than sticking to the same food day in and day out.
Ok, let’s get to it. How do you do it right?
I prefer the 2 week (14 day) method but sometimes you need to do it quicker, so I am also going to share the 10 day transition option as well.
14 day method
10 day method
Speaking of switching foods, when is the right time to switch dogs from puppy to adult dog food and kittens to cat food? I’ll Share that information below as well! :)
DOGS
TOY BREEDS (5-7 pounds): 9 months
SMALL BREEDS (8-20 pounds): 12 months
MEDIUM BREEDS (21-50 pounds): 12 months
LARGE AND GIANT BREEDS (51+ pounds): 18-24 months
CATS
When can a kitten transition to an adult cat food?
A kitten will enter the adult life stage around 1 year old (12 months), although large breeds such as a Maine Coon will become an adult between 18 months to 2 years old (24 months).
Therefore, you should consider your specific breed to determine when they can be transitioned to an adult cat food.
I hope this helps you in your journey as a pet parent. If you find my blog useful and beneficial, please share it with your friends and family! :)
