It’s my birthday, so you KNOW I’m picking a hike from the very TOP of my list! This FREE hike will be the “Rainbow Falls via Devils Postpile Trail” hike. I have been wanting to visit Devils Postpile AND Rainbow falls for MANY years now but the timing just never worked out. There is only a window of about 5 months to go here and I always seemed to be busy or out of town/country during that window. It’s not close to home for me, so I couldn’t just do a quick day trip, otherwise I could’ve made it work sooner. This year though, I decided that I am going to make it happen, FINALLY!
Devils Postpile is a National Monument made up of mystical looking columnar basalt formations and Rainbow Falls is the highest waterfall on the middle fork of the San Joaquin river. This waterfall is 101 feet tall and got its name from the MANY rainbows that appear in its mist on sunny summer days. You guys, it’s going to be magical!
I plan on making a weekend out of it because there is NO WAY I can be at the trailhead at 7am otherwise. Plus, anytime I drive more than 3 hours, I’m spending the night and is way more than 3 hours from where I live. If you want to make a weekend out of it too, let me know and I will tell you which hotel I am booking, so maybe you can book the same one too! :D
WHO? YOU & your canine and/or feline companions.
WHERE? We will meet at Mammoth Mountain Adventure Center at 7am to purchase our shuttle bus tickets and figure out where to go to catch the shuttle, etc. The shuttle takes us to the trail head but from what I hear, the parking lot near the shuttle fills up fast, so don’t be late.
WHAT? This is a 4.9 mile out & back trail that is considered moderate and will take about 4 hours total, WITH all of our stops for photos, sightseeing, time at the waterfall to cool off and hang out, etc. This does not include the time to get to/from shuttles, waiting for shuttles or time on the shuttles.
WHEN? Saturday September 14th 2024
COST: Absolutely FREE! However, the shuttle bus ticket to get us to the trailhead is $15 per person.
WHAT TO BRING:
Drinking water
Comfortable hiking shoes.
A swimsuit, in case you want to take a dip in the waterfall!
Sunblock
Snacks
First aid kit (maybe I’m “extra, but I don’t leave home without one)
A positive attitude
Your fur baby! This is optional of course.
BONUS:
I will also generously be providing FREE professional photos of you from the days adventures as keepsakes. I mostly capture candid shots but also include some curated photos as well. Be sure to let me know ahead of time if you have something in particular in mind.
NOTES:
You are responsible for you own health and safety. As well as the health and safety of your fur baby (cat or dog) should you decide to bring them. This is a free “event”, by participating, you are taking full responsibility for your own actions and safety - as well as the health and safety of your canine/feline companion(s).
I will only be bringing 6 people with me on these hikes and this one filled up before I even launched it. Please join the waitlist, the same way you’d sign up for the hike, in case someone cancels or I decide to make room for 1 or 2 more. :)
To reserve your spot, email me at Hilda.intothewild@gmail.com and title it “free September hike”. Please also be sure to let me know if you are coming alone or bringing a cat/dog or friend. :) If you are choosing to book overnight accommodations, I suggest you do it asap because although accommodations are very inexpensive, I’ve learned the hard way that availability is limited in this part of the world.
Please put this event in your planner/calendar as soon as your spot is confirmed - so you don’t forget that you signed up for it and double booked yourself doing something else too (yes, people have done this in the past). If you reserve a spot and change your mind for any reason, I kindly request that you give me at least 1 week to try to give someone else the opportunity to join us in your absence. :)
If you are bringing your fur baby, please make sure they get along with humans and other animals. Don’t forget to bring water, treats and eco friendly poop bags for them as well!
